It’s one of those weeks on the PGA Tour, you know…the one where it’s a weaker field. As we get ready for the FedEx Cup playoffs starting next week, there is still this week’s Wyndham Championship to play where it’s more so for players who are looking to qualify for the playoffs.
There is nothing wrong with a weaker field for a tournament, but as someone who watches golf I must say this does not appeal to me at all.
And that’s fine, as I know there is still meaning to this week’s tournament and I think its right to give golfers on the outside a chance to sneak into the playoffs. It also gives a player like Hideki Matsuyama who has not played the best this year a chance to work on his game.
Besides Hideki, the other notable players I see in this field are Henrik Stenson, Webb Simpson, Sergio Garcia, and Daniel Berger. Other than that, there is not much else to get excited about.
With all this being said, this is a tournament where you would think one of the guys listed above would be able to win, but don’t be surprised to see a guy you have never heard of come away with a trophy. If anything, I would rather see someone win for the first time as this would give him some exposure. Just look at Brooks Koepka, he won the Waste Management Phoenix Open a few years back and now look at him.
The golfing world was lucky enough to have Tiger play in the Valspar and Wells Fargo Championships where he turned an unwatchable tournament into must see TV, unfortunately this week no one will be capable of doing the same.
Anyways, I really do hope a first-time winner is crowned this week…but I will find out come Monday rather than follow it throughout the week.
Will you be watching this week’s Wyndham Championship? Do you watch every tournament or just the ones with strong fields/tournaments? Let’s discuss in the comment section below!
