My Picks For The Northern Trust Open

My Picks For The Northern Trust Open

We have finally arrived at the first tournament of the FedEx Cup playoffs, for the next four weeks the golfing world will be treated with the best golfers in the world. This weeks Northern Trust Open features the top 125 players in the FedEx Cup standings, this will be cut down to 100 after this week. Another thing to point out are the inflation in points, winners usually receive 500 FedEx Cup points but for the next four weeks that will be bumped up to 2000, meaning a win at any tournament can shoot someone up the standings.

There are also Ryder Cup implications at stake for a few players, some are trying to become a captain’s pick so a good showing can help out their case to being picked as one. Another thing to watch is anyone who is outside the top 100 or near it, as they will need a good showing as well to squeeze into next weeks tournament. Anyways, let’s get into my picks for this week’s Northern Trust Open, like every week these picks are more so players who offer some value at their current odds.

Patrick Cantlay – 33/1
Cantlay has had a very solid year which includes his first career win as well as a five top 10 finishes, this has helped him climb up to 14th in FedEx Cup points. In strong fields, I tend to pick guys who play well in them and Cantlay is certainly someone I like this week. It’s nice to see him having a great year, after what happened to his best friend a while back and overcoming health issues, he has made a name for himself on tour this year which is great to see.

Tommy Fleetwood – 33/1
Fleetwood has been outstanding this year, with 5 top 10’s and a whole lot of top 20 placings he seems to be in contention every week. He has yet to win on the PGA Tour this year but that seems to be coming to an end soon. Fleetwood is a guy who can contend in strong fields and he showed that finishing 2nd at the US Open and 12th at the British Open.

Kevin Kisner – 80/1
The thing about Kisner is he can never finish on Sundays, I think of last years PGA Championship and this year British Open. However, at 80/1 he offers some value and is a guy who can put together a nice week in a strong field. He is also fighting for one of those Ryder Cup captain’s picks so hopefully he is able to put on a good showing and make his case.

Only three picks this week, I haven’t been following this week’s tournament as closely as I probably should but I thought I would share some picks with you guys. I have been golfing all week and selling some clubs as well like I said to do in one of my most recent post, I will actually talk about this in an upcoming post so stay tuned! Like always, if none of these guys are in contention come Sunday, then I hope Tiger is right there in the mix! Enjoy the rest of the golfing week!

  1. Sebastien, my interest wanes in these playoffs because guy’s motivations are all over the map. Some are in it for the money, others for the Ryder Cup positioning, but it seems nobody to just be the FedEx Champion. In golf, the majors are about winning championships, and of course the Ryder Cup. I may tune in from time to time but am not really following.

    Thanks,

    Brian

    1. Brian, I agree with you here. Unless you are in the top 30 you really don’t have a chance of taking home the FedEx Cup. Some are trying to win the FedEx Cup and make the Ryder Cup team.
