My 2018 British Open Picks

My 2018 British Open Picks

We have arrived at the third major of the year, otherwise known as the Open Championship. In my opinion, it is the second best major of the year, with the Masters being my favourite. I just like this tournament because of the course conditions, the weather, the chaos really. I also like this tournament because it allows players from the European Tour to get some exposure, and its always nice to see someone you have never heard of lead the tournament. Anyways, lets get started, here are my picks for this years British Open!

Alex Noren – 30/1
A bit of a popular pick this week, but when you are playing as well as Noren is that is to be expected. He has been sensational this year, making 9 of 11 cuts on the PGA Tour this year, and has a win on the European Tour to go along with that. I also like him this week as he is familiar with links style courses which will be useful especially this week, that familiarity helped Noren finish T6 at the Open Championship last year. It would be nice to see Noren win here, he is the 11th ranked player in the world and I still feel as though people don’t know who he is, a win this week would change that.

Marc Leishman – 45/1
It feels like every time I provide you guys with picks Leishman is always on the list, hopefully this is finally the week he comes through. Although this last month on tour hasn’t been the best for Leishman, I like him this week based on his tournament history with his last four placings being T5, T2, T53, T6…now that’s outstanding. If there was ever a week, or major for that matter, this would be the one for Leishman.

Hideki Matsuyama – 50/1
It has been a weird year for Hideki, come the Open time he usually has a few wins under his belt, but this year it’s a different story. That’s not to say he has played terrible this year, in fact he finished 19th and 16th in the first two majors this year, and has finished inside the top 20 in his last three tournaments. Hideki managed to finish tied for 14th at last years British Open which is a good sign when looking at tournament history. I would love to see Hideki finally win a major, and this just might be the week. It has been a long time since Matsuyama was 50/1 in a tournament, so let’s take advantage of it!

Zach Johnson – 100/1 (win outright), 14/1 (top 5 finish)
Every year there is this one older player who is in contention come Sunday. Last year it was Kuchar, the year before Mickelson finished second, the year before….Zach Johnson won. In his last six outings at the Open, Johnson has managed to finish inside the top 15 in five of them, including a win back in 2015. As for this year on tour, Johnson has finished inside the top 20 in his last three starts. Not saying that 42 is considered old, but if there was a player over the age of 40 to put money on this week, Zach Johnson would be it. Sorry, Tiger.

Matthew Southgate – 125/1 (win outright), 25/1 (top 5 finish)
This is more of a gut feeling pick, but Southgate at 125/1 is very intriguing. The reason being is because he is a links player, having finished 12th and 6th in the last two Open championships. As for this year on the European Tour, Southgate managed to post a 5th place finish a few weeks back. I also like him at 25/1 to finish inside the top 5. For someone who is familiar with links style courses, Southgate seems like the guy to go with.

These are just some of my personal predictions for this week Open Championship. I am by no means a betting guru, however I do like these golfers chances this week and thought it would be a good idea to share them with you guys. Hopefully everyone enjoys this weeks major, now let’s go win some money!
