I was planning on getting this out yesterday, but decided to wait as there were a bunch of withdraws that happened as many players are focusing on next weeks US Open. These are one of those weeks in golf where you think more golfers have a realistic chance of winning as the field is not as strong. A few notable names in the field this week are DJ, Stenson, and Koepka….other than that you have a bunch of 2nd tier players and a bunch others who I had no clue were still on tour. I do believe that this is a week where you should bet less and instead save the rest for the US Open. This week I am looking at players who are more of a longshot to win, but still have a chance to come away with the trophy in my opinion.
Last week was odd, I was following the tournament and kept seeing Kuchar and Bradley creep up and eventually Finau on Sunday, unfortunately none of them could break through into the top 10. My picks placings for last week were:
Kuchar – T13, Finau – T13, Bradley – T23, Leishman – T62, Burns – MDF, Schwartzel – Cut
Overall, not the best not the worst…Bradley was inside the top 10 all week until Sunday but moving on, time for my FedEx St. Jude Classic picks!
Peter Uihlein – 40/1 (Win outright)
I think Uihlein keeps it going this week. In his last three tournaments he has showings of T5, T21, T5…..the recent form has been excellent. Uihlein continues to improve each week on his approach game as well, with this course having smaller greens I feel more confident in him compared to others. In a weaker field this week, he is someone who I really like, and at 40/1 has enough value for me to get behind.
Kiradech Aphibarnrat – 40/1 (Win outright)
Wow…I could not believe the value on Aphibarnrat when I first saw the odds. This year alone on tour Aphibarnrat has two T5’s, a T13 last week, has made 7 of 8 cuts, and to make it even better had another T5 finish on the European tour two weeks ago. The form is there, and as I mentioned earlier in a weaker field this looks like one of the strongest plays of the week.
Braden Thornberry – 100/1 (Win outright), 18/1 (Top 5), 8/1 (Top 10)
Thornberry is the #2 amateur in the world right now, and managed to qualify for the US Open on Monday. Besides that, there is really no data to support this pick, however the reason why I am going with Thornberry this week is because he grew up in the area. Last year, he finished in a tie for 4th so he knows the course well. With many notable names withdrawing throughout the week, Thornberry could post another nice showing again this year at a course he has had success at.
Kevin Tway – 100/1 (Win outright), 16/1 (Top 5), 7.5/1 (Top 10)
This was another intriguing name I saw when I first glanced at the odds. Tway has made his last 4 cuts on tour which includes a T5 and T9 finish….not bad at all. Tway also finished 31st last year at this event, if he can make yet another cut we know that his ceiling is there to contend come Sunday.
Harold Varner III – 150/1 (Win outright), 30/1 (Top 5), 16/1 (Top 10)
I wouldn’t put a lot of money into this pick…but a few shares wouldn’t hurt. Varner finished T7 at the Players last month, and had a T16 finish here two years back. He was also able to qualify for the US Open on Monday so hopefully that can turn into something this week. I would love to see this guy finally win, and in a weaker field this week it might be the week. A few shares in this guy will not hurt you!
Troy Merritt – 150/1 (Win outright), 30/1 (Top 5), 14/1 (Top 10)
Dating back to the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February, Merritt has made 9 of his last 10 cuts which includes two top 10’s. The only concern here is he missed the cut at this tournament last year, and the year before finished 68th, course wise not the best. However, his ability to make cuts this year is why I like the odds on Merritt, maybe more of a Top 10 bet but I will definitely have shares on a guy who can make cuts constantly as well as have the ceiling to contend on the weekend.
Like I mentioned earlier, this is not the tournament to spend big on….4 of my 6 picks are longshots with odds of 100/1 or more which is the route I am taking this week in hopes one of them pulling it off. I mean, John Daly is in this tournament which is all you need to know about the field for this week.
Hope you guys enjoyed my betting predictions for this week! Lets hope one of them pulls it off and we make some extra cash to use for next weeks US Open! Speaking of next week, be sure to check back as I will be writing about the US Open and golfers who I think will make good bets!
